<p>The other day Steve Jobs wrote an <a title="Steve Jobs thoughts on Flash" href="http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/">open letter</a> on Apple.com, and listed his reasons for not supporting Flash on the iPhone OS devices (iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch). I&#8217;m not going to go into the many reasons why his opinion is <a title="Thoughts on Flash lies" href="http://jessewarden.com/2010/04/steve-jobs-on-flash-correcting-the-lies.html">extremely misinformed</a> and that his posturing is <a title="Steve Jobs hates Flash" href="http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2010/04/why-steve-jobs-hates-flash.html">purely political</a>. But I do want to address this idea that HTML5 is the <a title="Web standards?" href="http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/it-strategy/2009/05/22/opera-web-standards-could-eclipse-flash-39655473/">Flash alternative</a>, and the only way to get the &#8220;<a title="Best way to view the web?" href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/">full web experience</a>&#8220;.</p>
<p>Here is a <a title="Steve Jobs HTML5 web experience on the iPad" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfmbZkqORX4">video</a> I did showcasing some of the best HTML5 website experiences I could find, all on the iPad.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="640" height="385" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rfmbZkqORX4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rfmbZkqORX4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>UPDATE: Holy Viral Videos Batman! I posted this at midnight Friday night (April 30th) and it&#8217;s already had over 20k views in two days!</p>
<p>As you can see, it&#8217;s terrible. Non of the sites work as the developers intended. The graphics are a joke, the game play non existent, and the video experience laughable. Now, running on a desktop machine, these examples work better, IF you use a <a title="Browsers and HTML5" href="http://www.deepbluesky.com/blog/-/browser-support-for-css3-and-html5_72/">browser that supports</a> all of the HTML5 tags being used.</p>
<p>Just for kicks, I recorded <a title="HTML5 on the Nexus One" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEUw7RyBrZA">this video</a> showcasing the same HTMl5 sites on a Nexus One.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="640" height="385" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AEUw7RyBrZA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AEUw7RyBrZA&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;rel=0" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>Some apps run better, and some even worse! My point is, HTML5 does not give a consistent user experience across devices. It doesn&#8217;t even give a consistent user experience across browsers!</p>
<p>Lucky for us, Android will be getting <a title="Android getting FP 10.1" href="http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=9355">Flash Player 10.1 in June</a>. Meanwhile, us developers (or is it we developers?) have to maintain multiple development environments in order to monetize our mobile apps across devices.</p>

<p>Wow! What an exciting year this is going to be! Adobe has been releasing some exciting video of Flash Player 10.1 on mobile devices. With the web experience lacking on mobile devices, these advancements in Flash truly bring the &#8220;desktop&#8221; internet experience to your phone. Not only can you now show content written in ActionScript 3 on mobile devices, you also get these added features and optimizations mentioned <a title="Flash Player 10.1 features" href="http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>Check out this video showing FP 10.1 on the Motorola Droid:</p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="256" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="FlashVars" value="fileID=4839&amp;context=64&amp;embeded=true&amp;environment=production" /><param name="src" value="http://tv.adobe.com/assets//swf/player.swf" /><param name="flashvars" value="fileID=4839&amp;context=64&amp;embeded=true&amp;environment=production" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="256" src="http://tv.adobe.com/assets//swf/player.swf" flashvars="fileID=4839&amp;context=64&amp;embeded=true&amp;environment=production" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<p>And here it is on the new Google Nexus One:</p>
<div style="text-align: center;"><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="425" height="256" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="FlashVars" value="fileID=4836&amp;context=64&amp;embeded=true&amp;environment=production" /><param name="src" value="http://tv.adobe.com/assets//swf/player.swf" /><param name="flashvars" value="fileID=4836&amp;context=64&amp;embeded=true&amp;environment=production" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="256" src="http://tv.adobe.com/assets//swf/player.swf" flashvars="fileID=4836&amp;context=64&amp;embeded=true&amp;environment=production" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<p>This truly brings the full web experience to mobile devices. Now if only Apple would get with the program. <img src='http://www.tutorialsbyibrent.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>It&#8217;s an exciting time to be a Flash developer! If you haven&#8217;t taken the plunge into ActionScript 3, now is the time!</p>
<p>To an exciting new year,</p>

I&#8217;ve added a small sample of portfolio projects to &#8220;Computer&#8221; and added my tutorial information under &#8220;Tutorials&#8221;. I&#8217;m still not satisfied with the layout of the portfolio component, but it&#8217;s getting there.
Also, I&#8217;ve fixed the clock so it updates more often (and correctly, DOH!). Thanks Daniel for the suggestion!
Anywho, check it out here &#8211;&#62; MyFlexPortfolio.com

<p>Currently it&#8217;s a work in progress, but I figure I&#8217;d get it out there, and force myself to get it finished. Anywho, feel free to check it out, and keep coming back as I update it.</p>

<p>Announcing the first ever &#8220;Ask iBrent&#8221; free online Flash Q&amp;A session. The idea is to get a number of questions from anyone interested in Flash or Flex. I&#8217;ll spend about an hour responding to these questions with a live demonstration and code samples. It&#8217;s my way of giving back to the awesome Flash community. If this first session is a success, I&#8217;ll plan to do more in the future.</p>
<p>Be sure to check out my post over at GTAL here &#8211;&gt; <a href="http://www.gotoandlearnforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&amp;t=24520">http://www.gotoandlearnforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&amp;t=24520</a> for more info.
